Soviet Political Aspirations

Concerning Soviet political aspirations in the context of World War II, our side believed:

"The Soviet Union, in its efforts to spread communism worldwide, will aim to establish dominance over neighboring countries and foster a friendly atmosphere with other related nations, and it is deemed especially likely they will stay with this approach geopolitics heads into a next phase of contention with Britain and America. And while from a historical, military, and economic viewpoint they will be careful not to erode the basis of giving ongoing priority to Europe, at the same time they will probably give steadily more weight to East Asian strategy."

Upon Germany's defeat, the Soviet Union became a bystander in the war, and our military authorities believed that: "Due to its inherent national character, it is probable that the Soviets hope that Japan and the U.S./U.K. will fight each other to exhaustion," and also speculated: "Should Japan play its cards right at this time, it is possible that the Soviets might clandestinely assist Japan."

ソ連の政略的願望。

第二次大戦をめぐる ソ連の政略的願望について、我が方は、 「ソ連は世界赤化のため、隣接諸国に対し 支配態勢を確立し、じ他の関係諸国に対しては 友好的空気を醸成することに努め、 次期段階における世界政策特に 対米英抗争に向かってその歩を進める 算が大である。また歴史的•軍事的•経済的観点 から依然歐洲優先の基本を崩さないよう 意を用いるとともに、 一方東亞に対する政略的比重を 逐次増大させるであろう」とみていた。

獨逸屈伏後、ソ連は戦争の圏外に 置かれた。我が陸軍当局は、 「その元来の国家的体質からして 彼は日本が米英と戦い共倒れになる ことを希望している」とみるとともに、 「もし日本がこの時、機略に富む 施策を行う場合、ひそかに日本と 通じ援助することもあり得よう」 とも観測していた。
